Why We Pretend Everything Is Fine (And What It’s Costing Us
Do you ever look around and think,
“Why does everyone else seem to have it together… while I’m barely keeping up?”
You’re not alone.
And ironically… that feeling is exactly what keeps the cycle going.
It’s called pluralistic ignorance—a big phrase for a very common experience.
It happens when everyone privately feels one way, but assumes everyone else feels differently… so no one says anything.
You feel overwhelmed.
But since no one else is saying it, you assume you’re the problem.
Meanwhile… everyone else is thinking the exact same thing.
That silence comes at a cost.
It fuels burnout.
It creates isolation.
And it adds pressure you were never meant to carry alone.
You start pretending you’re “fine”… because you think everyone else is.
But now you’re trying to live up to a version of “fine” that isn’t even real.
Or as I’d say—you’ve just added another elephant to your circus.
How to Break Free from the Illusion
If you want to reduce the stress this creates in your life or leadership, here are three simple places to start:
1. Say the Quiet Part Out Loud
Sometimes the most powerful thing you can say is:
“This week’s been a lot.”
That one sentence gives others permission to be honest too.
And it’s amazing how quickly the room changes when someone goes first.
2. Ask Real Questions
Instead of “How are you?” try:
“What’s been hard for you this week?”
That small shift creates space for real conversation.
And if you’re leading others, don’t stop there—ask the second question.
3. Normalize Limits
Healthy people—and healthy teams—don’t pretend they’re unlimited.
They model boundaries.
That might look like:
Ending work at a reasonable time
Taking real breaks
Saying, “I need help”
Because acknowledging limits isn’t weakness.
It’s wisdom.
🌱 The Power of Being Real
The real danger of pluralistic ignorance… is that it keeps us pretending.
But when you choose to be real—when you say, “Me too”—
you create space for others to do the same.
And that’s where healthier teams… and healthier lives… begin.
Maybe today’s the day you say what everyone else is quietly feeling.
Don’t be surprised if it feels like everyone around you can finally breathe again.
